Sergeant Hevers was one of 83 recipients of the awards, when he was awarded a Bravery Medal from the Governor-General David Hurley on Tuesday.
Sergeant Hevers, was recognised for bravery that he demonstrated when he was confronted with an armed man near Lucknow on October 1, 2009.
At the time he was a Senior Constable and was conducting traffic stop highway duties when he saw a motorist deliberately avoid the testing area.
He followed the vehicle and when it stopped, the driver got out and held a .22 calibre rifle to his head threatening to shoot himself.
Senior Constable Hevers, who was unarmed, began to negotiate with the man who continued to make threats to injure himself.
When he observed a farmer approaching, he negotiated with the armed man to allow him to warn the farmer to leave the scene unharmed. This required moving from behind the car door he was using as protection.
He then returned to his police vehicle and continued to negotiate with the agitated man.
When members of the NSW Police State Protection Support Unit arrived, the situation became increasingly tense as the other officers took control of the scene.
The man died from a self-inflicted gunshot after Senior Constable handed over control of the scene.
"As we face the huge challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to set aside time to celebrate these individuals and take inspiration from the example of selflessness that they set," Mr Hurley said.
"Australian Bravery Awards recognise courage and sacrifice. Perhaps most importantly, they recognise people who, in a moment of danger or threat, think of others ahead of their own safety."
