September 6, 1919 marks the day the NSW Director of Education, Peter Board, unveiled the Orange East Public School WWI Honour Roll.

The roll lists 100 former students who had served in the First World War, 17 of whom died in service.

Following the 1919 ceremony the school principal, AT Caldwell, led students, returned soldiers and relatives of fallen soldiers to Newman Park where they planted an avenue of Pin Oaks, each with a plate in honour of deceased soldiers.

Julie Archer's great-uncle William Beasley was killed in Gallipoli and had a tree planted in his honour.

She said Orange East have always been prolific at honouring those who fought and it was "brilliant" to see the young students out on Friday continuing the tradition.

"This generation is the one that will carry their memory on," she said.

Mayor Reg Kidd called the unveiling of a commemorative plaque "the most important day" he'd ever had as mayor.
