A MAN has died after his car hit a tree when it ran off a Central West highway on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to McDonalds Creek, about 10 kilometres north-west of Mudgee, after the man's station wagon left the Castlereagh Highway and hit the tree about 6am.
The driver - and only occupant of the vehicle - died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.
A report will be prepared for the information of the NSW Coroner.
