The left-arm spinner was part of the Orange colts side that travelled to Dubbo over the weekend and although they went winless in their two matches, captain Cumming believed it provided valuable experience for what was a young side.
"I think it was about giving each player a shot to show what they've got," he said.
"I got Tynan (Southcombe) to get a couple of death overs in, Jack (Strawns) who filled in got to open the bowling and try out a new position.
"We had Luke (Hunter) opening the batting and he's got another year, Dudley (Shepherd) batting at three, so we gave everyone a go to do what they're meant to do which will develop them quicker hopefully."
Cumming scored 78 runs across the two games and picked up six wickets at an average of just 8.8. This also included his second ever hat-trick.
"We lost focus I think. We played well in patches but we couldn't do it for the full 100 overs and fell apart in key moments because we didn't have that experience that other teams did," he said.
"It will be so good for them for the next couple years. They'll have that experience and I've showed them a few things that will hopefully help them out."
This was the first time the Cavs player got the opportunity to bat this season thanks to his side's dominance in the Bathurst and Orange Inter District Cricket competition.
He was glad he got the chance, because come the new year he will be making the move away from Orange to further his cricketing career.
"I'm going to play grade in Manly in the new year for the second half of the season," he said.
"I'm mates with Joel Davies down there and he said to come down for a training. I got to go down and it was pretty exciting.
"I got to meet a few of the boys that are top dogs in that premier cricket and they're happy enough to give me a run."
He is now looking to make the move around the second week of January and was happy to get some momentum behind him.
"It's really exciting. I've wanted to do this for a few years now and the opportunity came up and I couldn't go past it," Cumming added.
"I'll have to work my way up, put in performances and show them what I've got."
In the colts tournament, it was Bathurst that were crowned the eventual winners.
They beat Dubbo by six wickets as they chased down the winning target of 158 with 2.3 overs to spare.
