"I guess they liked it."
Helen Koenig might be able to see the funny side of her mailbox being stolen it, but that doesn't make her any less angry about the theft.
She went to sleep the night of September 22 having just finished making the front of her Borenore home look as good as possible.
"I was out there the night before and I'd actually fixed up the garden around the letterbox," she said.
"Then my grandson and I went out on the morning and it was gone."
She bought the mailbox five years ago at a shop near Bathurst. She paid $80 for it then, but the sentimental value it brings can't be measured.
"They used to have them at railway stations and you used to weigh your bags on them I think," she said.
"I had it in my shed for a couple of years and I got it out maybe three or four months ago, set it all up and I wish I'd left it in the shed now.
"I was just a lovely mailbox and something that I'd worked on for a while, getting it all together and it matched my house as well. It was a bit of a pride and joy for me, but someone just liked it more I guess."
But that wasn't the end of the story for her either.
That same day when she discovered the mailbox had been taken, something else strange happened.
"It's funny because I have a big white wagon wheel as well and that morning a car pulled up with a trailer," she said.
"I thought 'are they here to steal the wheel, have they come back?'
"I think they saw me sitting in the house through the front window and then they drove up a little bit to my neighbour's driveway, did a U-turn and headed back to Orange. I thought that was strange. I do have people that sometimes pull up and it was strange that it pulled up and quickly turned back."
Now with no leads on who may have taken it, she is almost resigned to never seeing it again.
"I'm thinking I'll have to get a new mailbox now," she added.
"It's a bit sad, but there's not much that I can do."
