Brodie Hines, 24, of Short Street, Bourke, was with two other men when he was captured on CCTV approaching a Nissan Dualis that was parked at a Bathurst Road motel on January 8.
Hines has been in custody since March 12 and appeared in Orange Local Court via video link on Monday.
He was captured looking in the vehicle's window about 4.40am.
He comes from Bourke, why does he come to Orange? Because he doesn't live in Orange he finds himself short of a quid.
- Magistrate David Day
He and a co-accused Jaiden Hines were then seen smashing the driver's side window so Jaiden Hines could retrieve the victim's wallet, which contained a driver's licence, firearms licence, $20 in cash and two master cards, from the dashboard.
Brodie Hines was given an eight-month jail sentence with a six-month non-parole period dating from March 12, when he went into custody, to September 11, 2019, for larceny, and he was given a two-year supervised community correction order for destroying the window.
Jaiden Hines was also previously sentenced in Orange Local Court on April 24 when magistrate David Day gave him a 12-month jail sentence with a six-month non-parole period for the larceny and an 18-month supervised community correction order for breaking the window.
Solicitor John Song said Brodie Hines was homeless and needed money when he was caught breaking into the car for "survival reasons".
"He had no food, he resorted to committing an offence to obtain funds to buy food," Mr Song said.
However, Mr Day noted references to illegal drug use in a report submitted to the court, and a comment from Brodie Hines that he would re-offend if he needed to.
"He comes from Bourke, why does he come to Orange? Because he doesn't live in Orange he finds himself short of a quid," Mr Day said.
Mr Day also sentenced Brodie Hines for driving a Mazda ute that was stolen from Cobar on March 8.
He was caught 120 kilometres west of Bourke, on the way to his grandfather's house, on March 12, and his driver's licence was expired at the time.
He was given a 12-month jail sentence for driving the stolen ute with a nine-month non-parole period until December 11, 2019. He was also convicted of driving with an expired licence without further penalty.
