A Central West Police District spokesperson said it seemed scammers were "intercepting" emailed invoices.
The recipient gets the legitimate invoice, then a second copy with an apology that the bank details were incorrect. The second invoice has new bank details which do not belong to the business.
Police are investigating and encourage anyone who receives an email of that description to contact the business for confirmation. Businesses are also being urged to report any occurrences to police.
Police have also received a report that scammers are still targeting the Central West area claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office and asking for thousands of dollars worth of Google Play gift cards in payment.
The ATO scam website says they do not accept the unusual types of payment including iTunes, Bitcoin cryptocurrency, store gift cards or pre-paid visa cards.
