The Sun Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac will see more than 80,000 participants from across Australia head to Sydney to take on the 14-kilometre course, and Orange Runners Club has a plan to help the really fit and nearly fit get over the line.
The club, which meets twice weekly for group runs, will partner with Jorg Fitness to host two free training sessions lead by fitness coach Jim Owen.
A coach of the former winner of City2Surf and the Colour City Running Festival half marathon, Harry Summers, Mr Owen will conduct two training sessions.
Runners club’s Brad Simmons said advice from an experienced coach offers opportunity to improve your running style.
Taking part in City2Surf for the ninth time, Mr Simmons is running four or five times a week, clocking up 30-40 kilometres, with a goal to increase to 50 kilometres, before tapering down the week before the run.
“It can be a bit tricky trying to get out in this cold weather,” Mr Simmons admitted.
“It’s a matter of trying to catch the sun at the right time and rugging up. If you have the right clothes it’s not too bad.”
Mr Simmons said in addition to the atmosphere the huge event creates, the appeal for him is catching up with the 12 or so friends which take part.
He said the club hopes to see a crowd for the Jorg Fitness skills session at Elephant Park on Saturday and run at Gosling Creek Reserve on Sunday.
Jim Owen’s top three tips for those running the City2Surf:
- Take it easy: "When you get to the first corner, look behind you and see how many people are behind you. It's an amazing experience just to look back and see there's 20,000 people, wherever you are, there's going to be a lot of people behind you."
- Enjoy every moment: "When you come down to Bondi you've achieved a great thing, enjoy it."
- Do a bit for charity: "Whatever your charity may be, enter and do something to make it count and make it worthwhile."
