Coles store manager Brock Bugden has ordered two tonnes, or 2000kgs, of the tasty ten-legged crustaceans which he reckons will be all gone by 10pm on Christmas eve, when the Orange store closes for the evening.
For a comparison, in a normal week Coles Orange would sell around 33kgs.
Mr Bugden's order ranks the Orange store at eight behind Penrith, Erina, Goulburn, Lake Haven, South City Shopping in Glenfield Park, Taree and Broken Hill as centres that love to eat prawns during Christmas.
Mr Bugden puts the popularity of the prawns down to Christmas being effectively cancelled by COVID-19 last year.
"It's been a bumper month and this has been our biggest year [for prawns] yet," he said.
Mr Bugden also sent a shout out to the store's deli manager Julie Robinson and her team who have been kept busy by customers keen to get their taste of the sea.
All up, Coles expects to sell 550,000kgs of cooked Australian prawns in its NSW stores.
This year Coles alone expects to sell more than 1.5million kilograms of ham.
Mr Bugden estimated his store would move 4000kg of ham and turkeys combined.
