Initially planned to run over three rounds, the tennis competition was then expanded to six and continued after the COVID-19 lockdown of regional NSW.
It was Orange who led at the halfway mark and who was eventually crowned the victor, but Bathurst very nearly snatched the spoils.
Hosting the last of six rounds at the Bathurst Tennis Centre on Sunday, the hosts beat Dubbo four rubbers to one then clinched a 3-2 win over Orange on the back of a 10-8 super tie-break triumph.
It was an effort which forced a countback to decide the overall champions and thanks to Orange's superior points percentage, it was they who came out on top.
"We'd been ahead the entire time and during the last couple of rounds we hadn't been at our strongest," Gibson said.
"So there was a bit of relief that we'd won it and limped over the finish line to hold off Bathurst."
The fact the three clubs were able to work together to finish the tournament just added to its success in Gibson's mind.
"The first three rounds were going once every six weeks and we all had plenty of time to organise things, but with the big lockdown we had to rush through the last three rounds," he said.
"That was a bit of a challenge which meant all clubs were affected with player availability.
"I think it's a testament to all three clubs that we were able to host the event once each in the final three rounds."
Bathurst Tennis Centre manage Andrew Mitton hopes the Central West Cup would now become an annual event, providing senior players across the region the chance to play representative tennis.
He also hoped to see the competition expand.
"During my 30 years of coaching in the Central West, this is only the second year we've held an adult open competition across the region," Mitton said.
"I think Blue Mountains are really keen to join next year if we can get it up and running. So we'd like think we can grow it.
"It's high quality tennis, a lot of these players if they went to Sydney, they'd compete nationally quite well.
"It's a really good standard and just good to see we can get people to come and play and commit to do it."
The full Orange team consisted of: Will Rikard-Bell, Dave Rogerson, Dan Wait, Grant Tranter, Bruce Johnson, Liam Gibson, Carl Buchtmann, Tian Yang, Ceejay Ah-See, Nicole Morris, James Wickham and finally Terry Kastrounis.
