But that was all part of the plan for jockey Jenny Duggan whose wealth of experience paid off in droves come the final straight.
Cinque Torri was paying $2.35 in the Allurecrete Flooring Class 1 Handicap - Heat of the Rising Star (1400 metre) on Tuesday at what was Towac Park's annual Christmas event.
Duggan was middle of the pack come the final straight, but just as you thought the Swedish-born jockey was out of things, a gap appeared as if Moses had parted the Red Sea.
"My horse ran a really nice race, just a bit of a muddling tempo, but when they all shifted out in the straight I got a gap and he put his best foot forward," Duggan said following the win.
She said despite the heart-in-mouth moment, the race she ran was pretty much plan-perfect.
"We wanted to get a couple with him today, just to teach him and go through his gears," she added.
"So it was a beautiful race in that sense. The track was really nice today, beautiful and very well prepared."
Silver Scissors ($3.20) ran second in the second race while Don't Question Me ($7) ran third.
But for Cinque Torri trainer Bjorn Baker, this was the race that capped off what was an incredible start to the race day.
Race one was the Orange Vet Hospital Maiden Handicap (1000 metres) and where Baker featured both Rupertson ($6) and Little Miss Magic ($2.7)
They would go on to finish first and third respectively, while hometown trainer Alison Smith narrowly missed out on the top honour, with Suomenlinna ($15) running second by less than a length.
Other winners on the day included the Brad Widdup trained and Alysha Collett ridden Narumi ($12) in race three Epiroc Maiden Plate (1400 metres), while race four MCSigns Country Class 2 Plate (1280 metres) was taken out by favourite De Forerunner ($2.30), which was trained by Dean Mirfin and once again ridden by Alysha Collett.
