Frank Saba, 40, of the Western Sydney suburb of Dharruk, had been clocked doing 66 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone on Edward Street, Orange, on the evening of June 14.
In Orange Local Court last week, Saba - who explained his family also has a property in Wattle Flat outside Bathurst - said he had just left Orange Hospital where his brother was being attended to after a "horrific" motorbike accident.
As he drove, Saba had been using a hands-free device to speak to his mother back in Sydney who was "hysterical".
Saba told magistrate David Day that there was "no excuse" for him speeding that night but he wanted him to understand the "headspace" he was in at the time.
While Mr Day took Saba's remorse into account, he couldn't ignore the man's driving record - which included a six-month jail sentence for speeding.
"It's not the worst I've seen but it's definitely up there," he told the offender.
Saba was convicted of speeding and fined $220.
