On Sunday, May 16, a 12-year-old girl was punched, kicked and thrown to the ground in an attack that was shared on social media.
The mother of the girl then spoke out and said more needs to be done to protect children like her daughter.
On May 25, Chief Inspector Peter Atkins confirmed that the matter had been reported to Orange Police.
"We've commenced investigation which is ongoing in relation to the assault with the view of having the matter dealt with under the Young Offenders Act," he said.
"No arrests have been made. We have spoken to the alleged victim and the alleged young person involved and their parents. It's a matter for us to continue our investigation into the matter."
One principle of the Act is that the least restrictive form of sanction is to be applied against a child who is alleged to have committed an offence.
