The founder of the group, Aaron Pearson, conceded that a regular service was probably not "financially viable", despite what he said was a need for residents of Molong to travel to Orange, and the limited bus services on offer.
The group has pivoted and is now focusing on having the station reopened to the Broken Hill Outback Explorer train, which operates weekly to and from Sydney and Broken Hill.
Mr Pearson said Molong railway station should be in the same category as Millthorpe railway station, which reopened as a "request-only" stop in 2019.
"I hope that something similar could be achieved here," he said.
Molong Railway Station was opened in 1885 and closed in 1992.
It currently houses Molong Library.
Mr Pearson said he hadn't given up hope of one day having Molong railway station opened to regular short distance passenger services.
