William Jones, of Sampson Street, Orange, and an unnamed man were stopped by a security guard when they crawled under a fence at a depot belonging to a civil engineering company at Spring Farm, Sydney, 10pm on February 29, 2020.
The two men claimed to be employees and Jones gave the guard his first name and a fake mobile number.
He then broke into a depot building and stole keys to the truck.
However, the security guard confronted him again about the phone number so Jones gave his correct number and drove the truck out of the depot.
The truck was located near Jones' residence at the time in Old Bathurst Road, Blaxland, on March 2.
The truck's GPS system recorded it being driving along residential roads through multiple western Sydney suburbs and although monitoring equipment was cut out of the vehicle when it was stolen, Jones posted a video of himself driving the truck on Instagram.
Employees also recognised him on CCTV footage from a previous visit to the site.
Magistrate David Day was perplexed by the crime.
"Why does Mr Jones steal and drive away a Kenworth truck and dog trailer, it's just bizarre, it's a valuable piece of equipment," Mr Day said.
"That's dangerous driving around in that big Kenworth tipper.
"He slipped under the fence right onto the feet of the security guard who they were able to bluff."
Solicitor Ellen McCutcheon said Jones had not committed any offences since he stole the truck in February and he had been drinking alcohol before the offence.
"There was a degree of intoxication that evening, he was at a party among a number of people that have been drinking," she said.
He gave Jones a seven-month Intensive Correction Order for entering the building with intent to steal, and a 15-month ICO for stealing the truck.
He also convicted Jones without further penalty for trespassing, stealing the keys and driving while unlicensed, which also earned him a three-month disqualification on obtaining a driver's licence.
