Councillors Kevin Duffy and Sam Romano are backing the idea of a free pool day.
"The pool is closed during the year for all sorts of reasons, and a lot of people are very sceptical," said Cr Duffy, himself not a swimmer.
"I get complaints that the pool is closed too much. This is a chance to give something back to the community for their tolerance."
Cr Duffy said other Central West communities hold Australia Day events at their local pool, and that Orange could consider this in future years.
At Yeoval pool on Australia Day festivities kick off at 8am with a guest speaker at breakfast, followed by the presentation of awards.
At Manildra pool, from 4pm, there is a Lions Club BBQ, the Sutton Family Relay, and novelty events.
"Australia Day should be celebrated," said Cr Duffy.
Entry prices at Orange pool are from $2.20 to $7.
