Jarrod Craig Knight, 47, of Leura Road, went to the Rivers shop in Summer Street at 1.15pm on November 29.
He took three women's black and white size 12 singlets, a pair of size 10 black and white women's shorts and two pairs of black and white size 8 shorts from a clothing rack.
Two witnesses who were sitting in a car that was parked outside the shop saw Knight place the items in a plastic bag before leaving the shop and heading west along Summer Street.
The witnesses told a staff member which way he had gone and they followed him through the Orange Arcade where they lost sight of him.
Police were contacted and identified Knight off the shop's CCTV footage.
About 2.20pm on the same day, police saw Knight walking west along Summer Street outside the Royal Hotel.
"Yeah I took a couple of items," he said when police questioned him.
The offending is not helped by Mr Knight's lengthy record in general and in particular stealing from shops.
- Magistrate David Day
He was arrested and police found six items of clothing from Rivers and a shirt from Jay Jays that police also believed was stolen.
Kinght said he was given the shirt by a friend who found it in a trolley.
Knight was refused bail for that matter and was still in custody when he appeared via an audio visual link and was represented by solicitor Charlotte Pascall in court on Monday.
"He instructed me that he took the items as Christmas presents for his family in Bourke," Miss Pascall said.
Previously he has been found in possession of Gen Tek brand earbuds that police also believed to be stolen.
Knight was found in possession of them on October 12 this year while loitering near a table outside an Orange cafe.
A cafe worker saw police patrolling the area at 11.50am, flagged them down and pointed Knight out to them saying, "I think he's a bit dodgy".
Knight appeared to be nervous while speaking with police and he admitted to recent drug use.
Police searched him and found two Bluetooth earphones valued at $15 each in his backpack.
He said a friend gave them to him however, police checked with the shop but the workers said they hadn't sold those earphones but according to inventory there were five missing.
Magistrate David Day gave Knight a seven-month jail sentence with a four-month non-parole period for shoplifting and possession of the stolen items. Knight could be eligible for parole on March 28, 2021.
"The offending is not helped by Mr Knight's lengthy record in general and in particular stealing from shops," Mr Day said.
