Many thought 2017 senior amateur champion Robert Payne would lead the field on the opening round at a course he knows so well, given he's won 14 Duntryleague club championships, but it was Mitchell who turned heads to lead by two strokes, at time of print of Tuesday.
Mitchell's round of 71 led rounds of 73 from Cowra's Peter Kirwan, as well as Warren Gorton, Stephen Robinson and Garry O'Brien.
Payne sat a further shot back on 2-over but remained on the course late Tuesday afternoon.
Kim Burke, from Shelly Beach, shot a 4-over 76 to be lead the women's senior amateur title race after the opening round.
The next best scores from completed rounds belonged to Susan Fenwick (Duntryleague) with 79 while Maggie Hayes (Bermagui) shot an 81 on day one.
