But as a fill-in during Sunday's catch-up Royal Hotel Cup clash with Bathurst City, the veteran seamer ticked a box he thought had long passed him by.
Rutledge took a hat-trick in the Warriors' commanding win...
And it's not as if these were low-order batsmen... he took out the meat of the Redbacks' attack.
Joey Coughlan (12) and Mark Day (1) were both sent packing by the veteran, leaving the away side with a tonne of work to do.
It took Orange City less than 17 overs to chase down the 81-run total as they chalked up a seven-wicket win, their first in the short-form competition.
The result was particularly pleasing for City skipper Ed Morrish as a host of replacements stood tall, but none taller than the "40-something-year-old."
"I needed a couple of players to come in for the match and he (Rutledge) made himself available," Morrish said.
"He came in and bowled outstandingly and he's a lock for our next T20 game... he's not going anywhere."
Morrish, who took a routine three wickets in the victory, says his squad has every intention of pushing for a title in this year's Royal Hotel Cup and is using a few devastating postseason results as motivation.
"We like to win everything," he said.
"There's a couple of us who have played in four Royal Hotel Cup finals since 2012-13 and we've only won one of them... we want to win that thing this year.
"To lose in the semi finals last year was disappointing too, considering how well we played before that."
Orange City's next T20 clash will come on December 4 against Molong at Wade Park.
