That's what happened to Captain America's Lachie Wilson two years ago and on Thursday, the young livewire made his first appearance at Waratah since doing his knee on field seven in 2019.
Wilson's side fell 4-3 to Superman in the third round of the Struddy's Super Series competition but from an individual standpoint, ticking off a return to touch footy was a big moment for 'Bilson'.
"The knee still is a bit rusty and I've got some rehab left to do but it's getting back to where it was so I'm happy," Wilson said.
"Touch is a lot different to league because it's more side-to-side whereas league is straight forward.
"It's a lot more on the joints and a lot more explosive so it takes some getting used to."
Even though Thursday meant a lot from an individual standpoint, Wilson's objective for the summer is simple - get the kids involved.
All six of the Struddy's Super Series teams have a healthy mix of youngsters on their team and the 20-year-old knows how important it is to bring the young guys up through the ranks.
"We do want to win the competition but the main goal is to get the younger fellas through," he said.
"I know what it was like as a young kid and you just want to learn off the older guys."
The battle with Superman was razor close as a last-ditch raid from Captain America almost saw them lock the scores at four.
The result leaves both sides with a 2-1 record after three weeks of action.
Wilson was a key part in the CSU Mungoes' sensational Wallerawang Landscaping Cup campaign and could potentially return for a second run with the students in 2021.
In the other 6.30pm tilt at Waratah, the women's Super Series took place over on field two where Wolverine put Captain America to the sword, winning 5-1 and accruing their second win of the season.
The result sees Wolverine sky rocket to outright first on the ladder while Captain America slumped to second spot.
