Zeb Swain, 30, of Diamond Drive, was already in custody when he appeared in court to face charges of possession of the weapon and housebreaking tools, and two charges of driving while his licence was disqualified.
According to a summary of information that was presented to magistrate David Day in court, Swain had driven a Ford Frange ute on Anson Street about 7.30am on July 21 while his driver's licence was disqualified.
However, he came to the attention of police who followed him to the Woolworths car park and the vehicle was searched.
During the search police found a machete with a serrated rear edge, they referred to as a "zombie knife" between the driver's seat and the centre console.
They also found a black full face mask with a white skull pattern next to the machete, as well as a fluoro blue baseball bat in the passenger-side footwell and a black torch on the passenger seat.
Mr Day said Swain was on bail when the items were found and although there was a passenger in the car Swain pleaded guilty.
Mr Day gave him a 12-month community-based custodial sentence, by way of an intensive correction order, and 100 hours of community service for possession of the "zombie knife".
He also gave Swain a six-month ICO and 20 hours of community service for possession of the housebreaking implements.
Mr Day gave him another six-month ICO and a six-month driving disqualification for the unlawful driving.
Police had also caught Swain driving while disqualified on April 20 this year for which he was given a 12-month community correction order with a six-month driving disqualification and a condition he attend rehabilitation.
Solicitor Mason Manwaring said Swain has been in custody in July 21 and he attempted to get into full-time drug rehabilitation six times but was not admitted "through no fault of his own".
