Dairy Creek Road, from the Mitchell Highway intersection to the Leewood estate, will become a key part of the Southern Feeder Road project.
And work on the next stage, to extend the road to near Towac Park racecourse, is set to start next year.
Orange City Council was told last week construction workers would be on site this week for the start of stage 3 of the SFR.
Technical Services director Ian Greenham said work was ready to start.
"The contractor is intending to mobilise onto the site later this week with a soft start early next week," he said last week.
"The remaining section, while we are attempting to secure additional funding for stage 4 of the Southern Feeder Road, we do have some of that already secured.
"Certainly enough to go to procurement early in the new year. That will be a three month process after we go out to tender and assign a successful tenderer for the stage 4."
Mr Greenham said council also had submitted funding applications for further work on the Southern Feeder Road. He said work was also continuing on upgrading Ploughmans Lane.
Cr Stephen Nugent asked what would be happening at the intersections including the provision of roundabouts.
Mr Greenham said there was a "concept design" for a roundabout at The Escort Way intersection.
He said a roundabout, or more likely traffic lights, were being considered for the Cargo Road intersection where a dogleg section of road could be straightened out.
