Coming into Sunday's Western Women Rugby League season opener against Panorama, Vipers' coach Marty Lyden wasn't sure how his largely new-look side would fare.

While a lot of experience remained on the team from the premiership winning campaign in 2019, there were a few fresh faces floating around the roster that made Lyden mindful it might not be all smooth sailing to kick off the title defence.
Well, any apprehension the coach might have had in the lead-up to kick-off at Wallerawang Oval was blown out of the water by full time as the Vipers made easy work of Panorama with a comprehensive 42-10 victory.
A few things have to go right for a first-up contest to go as well as it did on Sunday and the Vipers' ball control was one of the things that stood out to Lyden.
"I don't think we made a mistake for the entire first half," Lyden said
"All the new girls played well, it was a good day for the girls. They all clicked really well in the first half."
It's always hard to single out players after such an emphatic result but there were a pair of new players at Wallerawang Oval that stood above the rest, according to coach Lyden.
"Tay Press was really good for us in the halves," he said.
"Sam Afele was another ring in so it was two of the new girls who made the most impact for us.
"Overall, I'm very pleased with the ay everyone went in there and played together as a team."
A win so convincing can't help but raise the attention of the rest of the league and Lyden says the expectations in the wake of Sunday are fairly simple - contend for the championship again.
'We're all very hopeful that we'll be there at the end of the year and I'm sure everyone feels the same way," he said.
Vipers came out of the blocks flying on Sunday but in the latter stages of the contest, eased up slightly, something Lyden would like to focus on moving forward.
"For us, it's just consistency until the end of the game," he said.
"I think we dropped off a little bit in the final quarter and let a couple of tries in which was disappointing but that was probably just fatigue." Vipers play Cougars in round two.
