Asylum Seekers Centre CEO Frances Rush will share the story Staying home in a new home at the Orange Regional Conservatorium as part of Refugee Week.
"While many people have lost their jobs and had to stay home, people seeking asylum have not been included in any Centrelink support packages. The effect of that has been devastating," she said.
"Calls to the Asylum Seekers Centre have tripled since March with people needing help with the basics such as food and paying rent.
"People's mental health has been hit hard as they have gone from being independent to relying on charity and community support. And this is all coupled with being socially isolated because they are new to a community."
The theme of Refugee Week is The Year of Welcome and Ms Rush said it has never been more important for refugees and people seeking asylum.
"When we are all feeling the importance of our home and being local, a community can take an inclusive approach to making everyone in their neighbourhood welcome," she said.
She said it would also be an opportunity to meet with people to share ideas and explore new ways to collaborate with Orange City Council, which has made Orange a refugee welcome zone, Mums 4 Refugees, the Orange Migrant and Refugee Support Service and Orange Social Justice Group.
Prebooked tickets are limited to 20 due to coronavirus restrictions but the talk will be livestreamed on the Orange Social Justice Group Facebook page from 11.40am.
The council is also encouraging people to take part in a Share a Story, Share a Meal event where people can invite those closest to them to their home to share a meal and listen to a story online.
Register at www.refugeeweek.org.au, donate to the Refugee Council, email agallagher@orange.nsw.gov.au and a refugee story link will then be sent.
Orange City Council, Orange Social Justice Group, and Mums4Rufugees will also present an online blog at orangerefugeeweek.wordpress.com where there is a selection of resources for teachers or parents to help start conversations about how to support newly arrived people in Orange.
