But finding them quickly in an emergency is the key.
On Thursday Orange Fire and Rescue officers cleaned up and repainted the caps which locate access to the mains water supply around Orange.
Station Officer Matt Jeffery said crews refreshed hydrants in Anson and Phillip streets as part of the program and asked residents to help out.
"We'd like people, if they are aware of the hydrant [on their nature strip] to run the whipper-snipper over them," he said.
He said it helped crews open them faster in an emergency.
Station Officer Jeffrey said fire crews took a GPS-style locator with them to fires to quickly find the nearest hydrant.
He said without hydrant access crews would soon be short of water as fire trucks empty their 2000-litre tanks on an active fire within eight minutes.
