The roadworks include an upgrade of a one kilometre rural section of Forest Road, work on a nearby intersection, and a project to improve safety in front of Orange Public School.
The school project involves council crews upgrading the area around a pedestrian crossing outside the infants school section of Orange Public School in Anson Street.
The measures undertaken outside the school include the installation of concrete kerb blisters at each end of the pedestrian crossing and a road concrete traffic median island in the centre of the road.
There will also be a dedicated left hand turning lane for north bound traffic to access the carpark next to the former netball courts, the construction of separate entry and exit driveways at the carpark, and installation of new line marking and traffic signs.
Mayor Reg Kidd said improving the safety of a busy crossing is the main reason behind the project.
"There will be changes to how vehicles can access the carpark and nearby on street parking, however these changes will result in a safer pedestrian crossing," Cr Reg Kidd said.
"Once the work is finished there will be less vehicle congestion and increased visibility for pedestrians and drivers".
The cost of the $50,000 project is shared equally between Orange City Council and the NSW government.

"We've aimed to get as much work done as possible during the school holidays, but we're asking for the patience of drivers as they get used to the new arrangements," Cr Kidd said.
Contractors for Orange City Council have also made a start on the reconstruction of a one kilometre section of Forest Road at Spring Terrace.
The $800,000 project includes widening the road to be 10 metres across, raising the height of the road by laying about 200 millimetres of new gravel foundations, new bitumen seal, line marking and signs to improve the camber on the corner in front of Spring Terrace Public School.
It will also add a designated entry and exit on the Spring Terrace school car park and it will install a guardrail near the school.
The cost of the project is also shared equally between Orange City Council and the NSW government.
Orange City Council Infrastructure Committee chairman Cr Jeff Whitton is asking residents to be patient during the work.
"Residents will continue to have access to their driveway during the works, but they can expect some minor delays," Cr Whitton said.
"Please be cautious when driving through the road works and follow the directions of traffic control crew on-site."
Weather permitting, the Forest Road project is expected to be completed by the end of May.
Work is also set to begin in the coming days on road improvements at the intersection of Forest Road and Cadia Road, alongside the Rural Fire Service headquarters.
The project will involve replacing the existing pavement at the intersection with a 250 millimetre deep layer
of asphalt.
Weather permitting, this work will take less than a week to complete. It is the first stage of the upgrade of Forest Road from Cadia Road to the hospital.
