About 2pm on Wednesday a man entered a supermarket at a shopping centre on Anson Street and allegedly produced a knife.
He allegedly threatened an employee, demanding cash before attempting to pry open a cash register.
Staff at the supermarket were able to notify police and officers from Central West Police District promptly attended and arrested the 44-year-old man.
He was taken to Orange police Station where officers charged the man with attempted robbery armed with an offensive weapon.
