The severe thunderstorm alert warns of heavy rainfall with the potential of flash flooding and large hailstones in the few hours after the warning was issued at 7.30pm.
Along with Orange, areas inside the warning area include Scone, Inverell, Mudgee, Bathurst, Tamworth, Gunnedah, Moree, Narrabri, Coonabarabran, Wellington and Dunedoo.
An earlier warning for the mid-north coast of NSW is no longer in force, but the district benefited from strong falls during the alert, with 50.4mm observed at Gowan Brae and over 40mm at Guyra.
The State Emergency Service advises anyone within the alert zone should do the following:
- Move your car under cover.
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
- Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
- If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
- Unplug computers and appliances.
- Avoid using the phone during the storm.
- Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
- For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.
The next warning is due to be issued by 10:40 pm.
