In 1949 historian William Folster wrote of the history of several streets named after pioneers in the Central Western Daily with an almost intimate knowledge of the characters.
DALTON STREET
"James Dalton made a great contribution to the progress of Orange," he wrote.
"He helped clear Summer Street of stumps in the very old days and while waiting for customers to turn up at his store, he and his assistant did quite a job forming the main street, without remuneration.
"He was the last remaining member of that body of pioneers who signed the petition in 1859, praying for the creation of a Borough Council in Orange."
Mr Dalton was mayor of Orange in 1869 and had the Duntryleague mansion built in 1876.
He joined his brother Thomas to run flour mills, the Dalton Brothers store (the just re-opened Orange City Centre complex), running several major properties and becoming a Papal Knight in the Catholic church.
MOULDER STREET
According to genealogy website www.geni.com Joseph Moulder was transported for life, aged 17, to Australia, for stealing a silk scarf or handkerchief valued at five shillings.
After being pardoned he became one of the first free settlers at Bathurst and acquired considerable land around Orange where he built a home at Bloomfield in 1847.
It is claimed Mr Moulder attended the wedding of bushranger Ben Hall and Hall even hid out on Mr Moulder and wife Caroline's property.
Several streets in Orange have links to Moulder family members.
Endsleigh House on Endsleigh Avenue was built by Mr Moulder in 1858 and today is the oldest house in the city.
KITE STREET
"This street was apparently named in compliment to the Kite family," Mr Folster wrote 70 years ago.
"William Kite settled at Kangaroo Bay, now called Kangaroobie, where he developed a fine property," he said.
"His stock also pastured on Kite's swamp, now known as Erambie, near Molong.
"William Kite at one time resided in Orange, in the long ago, moving here when settlement developed."
