Orange City Council this week supported a development application from the owner of the property on the corner of Dora and William streets.
Dianne Gee said she was concerned about the damage the tree was doing to the heritage property on site and the footpath plus the likelihood that it would continue to shed large limbs.
She said a date for the tree's removal had not been set.
Mrs Gee said applying for the tree's removal was not a decision she had taken lightly as she appreciated trees.
"I'm saying that common sense has prevailed because of the damage being done to a heritage building," she said after the council's decision.
Only one councillor, Stephen Nugent, opposed the removal of the tree.
Others spoke of the safety and public liability insurance risks of retaining the tree now that it had shed at least two large limbs, causing damage to a car and the property.
