The man was driving to work when he smelt smoke at about 5.55am along Bowen Park Road, not far from Cargo and about 25 kilometres west of Orange.
Canobolas Rural Fire Service district officer Lachlan Allan said the man popped the bonnet to investigate the smell and found the car alight.

He called firefighters but the car was fully engulfed by flames within minutes.
"Unfortunately the car was completely destroyed," Mr Allan said.
He said there was nothing suspicious at play, with the engine fire the result of a mechanical fault and the flames extinguished by 7am.
Meanwhile earlier on Thursday, a truck carrying newspapers - including the Central Western Daily and Midstate Observer - rolled over near Millthorpe.
Canobolas RFS received a call about 500 metres north of Millthorpe where they found the truck on its side.
Firefighters and SES workers found the driver standing up in the cab uninjured, but unable to exit the vehicle.
Emergency service workers cut the man free, where he was attended by paramedics. He wasn't taken to hospital.
The truck had been removed from the site by 8.30am.
The newspapers on the truck were delivered later on Thursday morning.
