With Weatherzone predicting rain "tending to snow" on Friday, with snow falling to 800 metres and a top of seven degrees, Cabonne Council has indicated the gates could be closed at 3pm on Thursday to ensure motorists are not at risk of an accident or being stranded on the mountain overnight.
The road will be inspected at 9am on Friday and again at 4pm.
The gates will remain closed over the weekend if the snow falls continue, following advice from the State Emergency Service.
"Council's priority is the safety of road users," a spokesman said.
"It will endeavour to open the roads should conditions allow it.
"However, if snow or ice make conditions dangerous, the boom gates on the access roads will remain closed."
Drivers have been reminded it is an offence to drive past a road-closed sign.
Saturday's snow is predicted to fall as low as 700 metres, ranging from -1 degrees to four degrees.
Sunday has been earmarked for "possible snow" above 700 metres, ranging from -1 degrees to five degrees.
The below-zero minimum temperatures will continue into next week.
