LATE winter snow is forecast for parts of the region this week with the mercury set to plummet.

The icy blast is predicted to start on Thursday afternoon bringing snow to the Jenolan Caves region from around 4pm, the Bureau of Meteorology's MetEye website shows.
From early on Friday morning light snowfalls will extend to areas around Lithgow and Orange and these continue until Sunday morning.
Maximum temperatures from Friday until Sunday will be single digit, with the mercury in Lithgow to hover around 7-8 degrees, in Orange it will be a little cooler at six degrees, while Oberon's top will be around nine degrees.

The freezing weather follows a very warm July for many parts of the region with some towns recording a median maximum temperature of two degrees above average.
