Police arrested the 48-year-old Oberon man on Sunday afternoon after he was allegedly caught speeding in a 60km/h zone on Stewart Street, in Bathurst.

They will allege the driver was involved in a minor collision in George Street around 3.30pm and then left the scene of the crash without exchanging particulars with the other driver.

A short time later he was pulled over by police in Durham Street after allegedly driving at a speed of 147km/h in Stewart Street.

When arrested by police he was subjected to a breath test which produced a positive result.

Further analysis returned a reading of 0.183, placing the driver in the high range category for drink driving.

Chifley Highway Patrol commander Sergeant Peter Foran said a background check on the driver also revealed he was in breach of bail conditions.

The driver was refused bail by police and appeared before the registrar in Bathurst Local Court on Monday. He remains in custody until his next court appearance.

Sgt Foran said the man was charged with a string of offences including driving at a dangerous speed, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, failing to exchange particulars, high range PCA and breaching his bail conditions.

“Obviously his licence was suspended on the spot,” he said.

Sgt Foran praised the quick work of his officers in arresting the driver, saying the combination of speed and alcohol could have had catastrophic results.

“We picked him up quickly, which is great,” he said.

“Highway patrol is always out and about. We’ve got a high profile and thankfully on this occasion we got the driver off the road very quickly.”

The man’s arrest was the second major incident for Chifley HWP during Operation Safe Return.

On Saturday afternoon, a 76-year-old Lyndhurst man died at the scene on a single vehicle crash on the Mid Western Highway at Blayney.
