Rain eventually intervened just five overs into Wakatipu second XI’s chase, leaving the black and golds’ attack without much of a run leading into Monday’s opening game of the Queenstown Schools Cricket Carnival.
But prior to that Orange had piled on a whopping 7-224 from their 20 overs, an incredible effort considering they were reeling at 2-0 after the first over, CYMS’ Harry West and Kinross’ Brad O’Brien were packing without scoring.
That brought Orange City’s Lachlan Coyte and then Cavaliers’ Hugh Middleton to the crease, and the star pairing – both established Orange District Cricket Association top graders – promptly went ballistic at Arrowtown’s Millbrook Cricket Club.
Cracking along at more than 12-an-over, Coyte and Middleton added a swashbuckling 166 for the third wicket from just 13 overs before the latter was dismissed for 89, at that stage Orange still had five overs remaining.
They made the most of them too with Coyte, who was on 66 when Middleton was caught, taking charge and piling on another 26 before being caught out eight short of his ton.
Coyte’s Orange City teammate Nick Warburton chipped in with a valuable, unbeaten 18 at the end as well, the black and golds adding another 58 from the final 30 balls of the innings.
Coyte’s innings included seven fours and another four sixes, while Middleton smashed seven boundaries and five maximums in his half-ton.
Although they were well behind the 11-an-over needed from the get-go Wakatipu still started their chase reasonably well, and worked their way to 1-31 from five overs before the rain set in.
At that point Orange City’s Harry McGregor had figures of 0-8, Kinross tweaker Gus Cumming had taken 1-9 after bowling CJ Kemp (6) and his club teammate Harry Kermode had 0-9.
Orange kicked off its the Queenstown Schools Cricket Carnival against Wakatipu’s top side on Monday, that game was in progress at time of publication.
