The fire, in Nangar National Park, was lit by lightning on Wednesday and was discovered on Thursday at about 1.40pm.
Fire crews were initially hampered by a lock which had been tampered with at the entrance to fire tracks, which RFS captain Geoff Selwood said could have been the difference between the blaze staying at about a hectare to breaking into grasslands and heading towards Orange.
MAP: Where was the fire?
Three brigades responded to the call-out alongside National Parks officers, and two aircraft were brought in through Cowra.
The RFS had the blaze under control by about 5.30pm on Thursday.
Elsewhere in the region, firefighters remain on scene at a 653-hectare blaze burning north-east of Dubbo.
The blaze is burning through bush off Forest Road in the Goonoo Zone State Conservation Area around 50 kilometres.
As of 7am on Friday, the RFS said the fire is now listed as ‘being controlled’ and is at ‘advice’ level.
As crews continue to fight the fire, a number of road closures remain in place for motorists travelling through the area.
