While Mr Betts himself has been volunteering for far longer, his beard will be shaved off at the Cancer Council’s Bark for Life to raise money to fight cancer.
Mr Betts said the death of “good friend” Sandy Ostini earlier this year and others he knows fighting cancer had pushed him to do what he could.
“We’ve got to kick this disease,” he said.
Having been clean-shaven all his life up until retiring a few years ago, he’s not in fear of a shear – he just decided to do something different in growing it out.
However, there’s nothing different about Betts raising money for the cancer council.
He said he hadn’t had too many donations flood in, but was hoping for some on the day.
Mr Betts said whoever “stumps up the most donations” on the day gets the honour of shaving the beard.
Bark for Life is from 9am to 1pm on Sunday at Endeavour Oval and the shave is at 12.15pm. Donate at https://www.cancercouncil.org.au/relayforlife/individuals/ei00058387/.
