The match was a crucial contest for both clubs who still have top four ambitions and – just as their positions next to each other on the ladder would suggest – there was little that could separate them on Bob Roach Field.
Millah Allcorn’s goal gave Confederates the lead and Souths spent the majority of the match playing catch-up, or at least trying to until sustained pressure told and Danielle Fisher banged in an equaliser from the field.
“We were down for most of the game and to come back with a draw is great. Obviously we really wanted the win but we’ll take the draw because Feds such a quick and well-drilled side this year,” Souths captain Ali Stanford said.
“A few things didn’t go our way but that’s something that happens in any sport. We kept playing to the whistle and playing as a team and we came away with a draw which we’re very happy with.
“We had them on the back foot for a while and continued to move forward as a complete team and in the end Danielle found the goal.”
Confederates coach Fiona Reith, who gave Souths a huge wrap before the game, said she was happy to come away with a draw against that calibre of side.
“The game was a real arm wrestle with both sides having a lot to play for,” she said.
“Credit to Souths as they didn't give up when we got the early goal with their defence holding us out for the rest of the match.
“We had our opportunities to win the game and the positives that come from that for our young team is enormous.
“We will take some confidence into the last few rounds and continue to keep developing our juniors that are coming through.”
Souths stay six points behind Bathurst City in the battle for fourth and Feds remains four points adrift of the two blues.
