Orange City Council Parks, Trees and Waterways committee chairman Reg Kidd has called for a series of measures to deter further crimes at the popular Woodward Street park.

Cr Kidd said security cameras, lighting near the park’s toilet block and solar lighting at ground level would make the area safer.

“It’s a worry, it’s a huge worry,” he said.

Police are investigating an incident last Thursday where a man in the park exposed himself to two children, aged eight and 11-years-old.

They were playing near the intersection of Cecil Road and Warrendine Street when they were approached by a man at 12.30pm.

The man exposed himself before walking way towards National Avenue.

Detectives re-interviewed the witnesses over the weekend and are following a number of leads.

In November last year a five-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in the park’s toilets. A man has been charged and is before the courts.

Cr Kidd will put his proposals to the next council meeting, saying small security cameras used by farmers to monitor stock and intruders could be used.

“You can get them fairly cheap those cameras,” he said.

Cr Kidd said the park was used by walkers, often in the early evening darkness in winter, and better lighting was needed.

He suggested installing solar lighting near the toilets and low-intensity lighting on the ground.

And he called for people to act if they spotted anyone suspicious in the area.

“If anyone sees anyone lurking around they should immediately call the police. It’s better being safe than sorry,” he said.

Canobolas Local Area Command acting inspector Yonneka Hill said a call to police would enable them to “check the bona fides” of anyone acting suspiciously.

And she said police could assess the safety of the park for council.

“We would be willing to do a safety audit,” she said.

Acting Inspector Hill said police had done crime hot spot audits of the CBD.
