Fay Ann Bargwanna, 44, of Goorawin Road, was also fined $500 when she appeared in Orange Local Court.
Bargwanna was seen by a witness outside the Crossroads clothing store on the afternoon of September 28 taking items from a rack and leaving without paying for them.
A staff member and another witness followed Bargwanna and saw that she was carrying a shopping bag and handbags with items in them, some with tags still attached.
Bargwanna handed two shirts back to the staff member, said “sorry” and kept going.
Police found her at the bus stop in Summer Street.
She said she was holding the bags for someone else.
A total of $700 worth of items stolen from Myer, Supre, Strandbags, Cotton On and News Express were found in Bargwanna’s possession.
Solicitor Rebecca McIlveen said her client wanted to complete residential rehabilitation and had struggled with addiction “for the entirety of her adult life”.
Magistrate Terry Lucas said there were numerous similar offences on her record and told Bargwanna to go straight to a rehabilitation program.
“It’s a trap,” he said. “Drugs, stealing, drugs, stealing, drugs, stealing.”
