Boston star Jayson Tatum missed the game on Monday night (Tuesday AEDT) because of a right ankle injury, but the Celtics had more than enough to make up for the absence of their leading scorer (27.1 points per game) and rebounder (8.3).
White had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He completed his triple-double when he passed to Payton Pritchard, who hit a three-pointer with 6:25 to play.
"I'm not usually one that tries to chase stats or whatnot, but I saw that I was one away," said White, who also recorded his 5000th career point with a three in the final quarter.
"I've been close a lot of times, so I wanted to try and get it this time."
Pritchard had 23 points in the Celtics' sixth straight victory.
Jaden Ivey led Detroit with 21 points.
In Los Angeles, LeBron James had 25 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds, and D'Angelo Russell scored 27 points while tying the Lakers' single-season record for three-pointers in a 136-105 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.
Russell's six three-pointers against the Hawks gave him 183 this season, passing Kobe Bryant's 180 in the 2005-06 season and tying Nick Van Exel's franchise record set in 1994-95.
Russell also had 10 assists, while Anthony Davis had 22 points and 15 rebounds as the Lakers snapped a two-game skid with their 13th win in 20 games.
Jalen Johnson scored 25 points and Bogdan Bogdanovic had 17 for the Hawks.
In Chicago, DeMar DeRozan scored 28 points and found Nikola Vucevic for a key hook shot with 9.3 seconds left, helping the Bulls edge the Trail Blazers 110-107.
Vucevic had 22 points and nine rebounds in Chicago's third win in four games. Ayo Dosunmu finished with 23 points and 10 assists.
Australian Duop Reath did his best for Portland, scoring 14 points and a rebound from 17 minutes of court time.
Anfernee Simons scored 12 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter for the Trail Blazers, but couldn't get off a three-point attempt from the top of the key before time expired.
Deandre Ayton had 25 points and 15 rebounds as the Blazers lost for the seventh time in nine games.
In Salt Lake City, Anthony Edwards had 32 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to lead the visiting Minnesota to a 114-104 win over Utah.
Edwards scored 25 of his 32 points in the second half to help the Timberwolves pull away late.
Collin Sexton led Utah with 24 points. Lauri Markkanen had 22 points and 12 rebounds following a six-game absence due to a bruised right quadriceps.
Cleveland beat the Pacers 108-103 in Indiana, the 76ers held off the travelling Miami 98-91, the Knicks beat the Warriors 119-112 and Sacramento scored a 121-111 home win over Memphis.
