ORANGE’S Lyndsay Glohe will taste finals action in the W-League for the first time after her Central Coast Mariners outfit went to the top of the competition on Saturday.
The Mariners’ 2-0 win against Melbourne Victory ensures they cannot miss out on the four-team finals series and also gives them a great chance to clinch the minor premiership, as they lead defending champions Brisbane by one point with two regular-season rounds remaining in the second season of the competition.
Glohe, a former Orange High School student, has been in terrific form for the blue and golds, who along with Brisbane boast the best defensive record in the competition of just five goals conceded in eight matches.
The 21-year-old left back has helped the Mariners to two successive clean sheets as star striker Michelle Heyman, who leads the league easily with 10 goals, does the damage up front heading into the finals.
Meanwhile, Millthorpe junior Karina Roweth played a full 90 minutes as Adelaide secured their best result of the season against Brisbane.
Roweth’s Reds Reds, chasing their first win this campaign, took a surprise 2-0 lead against the Roar before goals either side of half-time allowed the premiers to fight back and secure a 2-all draw.
Fellow Orange product Nathan Sherlock also has a great chance to feature in his first finals series with the Mariners’ National Youth League team, despite his side dropping two points in a dour nil-all draw with the AIS on the weekend.
The Mariners are second on the NYL ladder to Melbourne only on goal difference, although third-placed Gold Coast and fourth-placed Sydney FC have a game in hand on the Gosford-based outfit.
