Swimmer goes missing at Chifley Dam on Christmas Day

Emergency services were called to the dam at about 1.50pm on Saturday after reports that a swimmer was missing.

A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said that two crews were sent to respond to the incident, but were unable to assist.

"In the end we weren't required, then police took control of the scene," they said.

A NSW Police spokesperson said that the missing swimmer was a 42-year-old man who had been at the dam with other people.

"Upon arrival, police were told that a 42-year-old man had entered the water and had failed to surface," they said.

A search started with the assistance of Police Rescue and the State Emergency Service (SES), however it had to be called off just before 8pm due to bad light.

"And they have requested assistance from the police dive unit for tomorrow," the NSW Police spokesperson said.

Chifley Dam was closed on Saturday as emergency services responded to the incident.

It will remain closed on Sunday as search efforts for the man continue.
