Orange's acting inspector Andrew Barnes said keys for a Ford Ranger were stolen on Sunday night or Monday morning from another car at the same north Orange residence.
The Ford Ranger was destroyed by fire at Glenroi Oval behind the hockey fields on Monday morning.
A fire crew responded to 000 calls at 6.36am gaining access to the oval via Maxwell Avenue, but found the late model utility well alight.
The crew wore breathing apparatus to cope with the toxic fumes before dousing the fire with foam in about 20 minutes.
A second crew was then called back to the scene after a spare tyre on the ute reignited.
The ute fire follows the recovery of a burnt-out dark-coloured 2007 Holden Caprice which was recovered in the Canobolas State Forest early this month.
The Caprice was stolen from a Byng Street property at the end of November.
A day later thieved broke into a storage shed at the same location as the stolen Caprice and took a 2021 blue Yamaha 125cc motorcycle which is yet to be recovered.
Acting Inspector Barnes warned residents to be careful where they left car keys.
"The best way to stop your car from being stolen is the lock the keys away," he said.
He said police are aware of social media posts from people claiming to be involved in the property thefts and subsequent destruction.
Anyone who knows anything is asked to contact Orange police immediately on 6363 6399.
