Fiona Rossiter, who is a registered theatre nurse, stumbled across an article about a lady called Fairy Sparkle and her creation of Fairy Sparkle Gardens as an outlet for sick children.
In July last year Fiona formed the Fairy Sparkle Garden Committee and since then the 19 regular members have worked tirelessly to raise $50,000 for the project.
Regular committee members are Fairy Sparkle (founder), Fiona Rossiter (chairperson), Phil Baker, Margaret and Peter Bowers, Kerry Campbell, Errol Culbertson, Jill Godfrey, Patricia Jane, Cathy Marshall, Stuart MacKinnon, Ross Noble, Megan Rout, Jan Savage, Cr Margaret Stevenson, Noelene Thurston, Stephen and Donna Picker and Linda Shreeve.
Throughout the year fundraising activities have been organised including the Fairy Express train trip, Penny the Pig, Andy's Coffee Lounge coffee day, a Bunnings barbecue, the Fairy Tale Ball, the John Cook Golf Day and the Fairy Sparkle raffle to help reach the target.
The once plain area adjacent to the Children's Ward is now a visual delight with wonderful plants, flowers, two water features and garden ornaments such as fairies and gnomes.
Three speakers hidden in three large rocks within the garden will send out relaxing music and lights in ornamental mushrooms will light up the garden at night.
Local artist Les Quick has painted fairies on the walls much to the delight of Fiona Rossiter.
"It is a therapeutic garden to cater for children's sight, tough, hearing and smell,” Mrs Rossiter said.
"Most of the time these children are really sick so the garden will relax them and the parents as well.
"It's been hard work but it has come together so well,” she said.
Mrs Rossiter thanked everyone involved including Jo Sangster who designed the garden and Neil McNabb who built the garden with the help of the hospital maintenance staff.
