Wes Lummis hoping to fire for Cavaliers against Rugby Union in Royal Hotel Cup match

That approach will certainly come in handy for Cavaliers on Friday night should the rain hold off as they take on Rugby Union in the Royal Hotel Cup.

The 2020/21 season was a breakout campaign for Lummis, who averaged 48.5 with the bat, more than triple the season before (14.9).

It also coincided with the former all-rounder deciding to put away the bowling boots.

"I just couldn't get the body right," he said on his decision to become an out and out batter.

"The back wasn't great and playing others sports, I made a conscious effort to stop bowling. We've got plenty of stocks too with (Kyle Buckley) and Hugh Britton coming through, so they didn't need me which was good."

But with that change for his body's sake, also came a change in the mind.

"The biggest thing is, because I'm not bowling I've got to do something to keep my spot in first grade because Cavs are very fortunate that we do have great depth," Lummis added.

"Even second grade, some of them could play first grade in other teams.

To say Lummis can float in the order doesn't do the big hitter justice.

Last season he featured everywhere from four to eight. The year before that, he batted ten one week before opening the next.

That trend has continued in the rain-affected season so far, batting at four in their only other T20 game and six during the Bathurst and Orange Inter District Cricket competition.

"(Matt Corben) has probably given me a bit more of an opportunity because I'm not bowling, he's probably put me a little bit higher. The likes of Harry Pearce should be batting ahead of me, but because they've got a role with the ball, Corbs is juggling that," Lummis said.

"If we are looking for a declaration or if we're chasing quick runs, Corbs will push me up the order and give me a crack.

"I'm pretty aggressive and I don't often keep my head.

"Even on the weekend I didn't score many runs because I didn't play the best shot. I think I'm always going to go quite hard and Corbs knows that. I'm a see ball, hit ball type guy and he backs me every time."

Cavs and Rugby have both been drawn into pool B of the Royal Hotel Cup, with the top two progressing to the competition's semi-finals.

Lummis knows this match could play a big factor in who goes through.

"I think batting wise, we've got such depth that most blokes can score 'em," he added.

"The biggest thing is going to be maintaining our intensity in the field for the full 20. We do come out quite hard and then lull a bit in the middle.

"Then hitting our spots with the ball. Buckley is great towards the death, but Rugby are a class act. They're quite aggressive, so if we do get a couple boundaries hit against us we have to hang in there and go back to our plans."

The game will get underway at Wade Park from 6.30pm.
