Charity services are preparing to be swamped this Christmas as the winding back of COVID support payments, rising housing prices and the cost of living put people under financial and emotional pressure.

Orange Salvation Army Major Colin Young says Christmas is the busiest time of year for the Salvos, and after another year of social and economic disruptions, the charity anticipates that the level of need will reach a new peak.
"While Christmas is a time of joy and celebration for many, others doing it tough in our community find it an extremely difficult period for them personally," he said.
"The increased isolation, financial stress and mental health impacts of COVID-19 this year will only exacerbate these issues."
The Salvos have just launched their annual nationwide Christmas Appeal, with hopes of raising $20 million. Donations can be made via the Salvos website or in person at any Salvos or Kmart store. People wanting to help locally are invited to drop off donations of toys and non-perishable food at The Salvation Army in McNamara Street.
Major Young urged those doing it tough to seek help.
"Anyone in need this Christmas can reach out to us at The Salvation Army Orange, in McNamara Street, by calling 6362 1870 and we'll do all we can to support you.
"We don't want anyone to go it alone this year, if you need food, gifts, financial support or are feeling lonely, please get in touch with us."
Vinnies Regional Director Phil Donnan said Vinnies were also seeing high demand for their services.
"With (the extra) JobSeeker payments, requests for assistance halved. Since the extra payments ceased, demand has gone back to what it was, and even surpassed what it was," he said.
The real estate boom was also creating pressure.
"With the real estate market going off, rental prices are increasing, and people on a fixed low income have been under rental stress.
"Conversion of some properties to Airbnb and short term rentals has taken quite a few houses off the market and that's put a bit of pressure in there, so we've seen a few new people come to us with housing stress."
Mr Donnan said donations were always welcome at Vinnies stores. The charity is also currently looking for volunteers to help expand the Vinnies Van meal service.
