Mr Barrasch won first prize in the Australian Facetors Guild Limited, 2001 Peter Collins Trophy in Warwick last weekend. The prize acknowledges excellence in the specialised field of gemstone cutting.
Mr Barrasch, well known in the Cudal district through his former business as a newsagent, has been cutting gemstones for 25 years.
The competition involved cutting five gemstones and Mr Barrasch scored 481.82 out of a possible 500.
This was the first time he entered the Australian competition, although he has previously competed in some sections of the event. There were 198 stones in the competition.
He said this was the most significant trophy he had won since becoming involved in faceting. It could take up to 60 hours to cut a gemstone for a competition.
Mr Barrasch now plans to take part in next year’s 20th anniversary competition to defend his title. He is also considering entering an international competition.
