Andrew Scott Gillon, 45, of Moad Street, was not present in court to face the charge of having custody of a knife in a public place.
According to police, officers were called to South Terrace at 8.15pm on August 2, due to a report of four people fighting.
While they were in the area they saw Gillon walking down a path between two houses so they shone a light on him and saw he was holding something long and black in his left hand along the side of his body.
He was asked to stop and police saw him through what appeared to be a baton into the grass.
Due to a concern that he could be in possession of other weapons the police handcuffed him as a precaution. He was searched and nothing else was found.
Police then picked up the baton which was about 50 centimetres long.
It had a red handle with black material wrapped around it and police discovered it also had a leather sheath that concealed a 30 centimetre blade.
Gillon told police he purchased the knife "some time ago" and hid it at a family member's address for safe keeping.
However, the family member refused to let him bring it into the house so he hid it in the yard but retrieved it on August 2, the night he was stopped.
Magistrate David Day said Gillon had an "appalling" record with offences including stealing from shops, assault, robbery in company, armed with intent, assault police, larceny, dishonesty and failing to appear in court.
He said Gillon was also convicted of having a knife in a public place in 2020. Mr Day fined him $1100 and the weapon was forfeited.
