Officers had gone to the home of Kaleb Wayne Morrow, 23, of south-west Orange, on February 13, in relation to a separate matter but found he wasn't home.
After receiving permission to enter the property from a family member, police found six cannabis plants in pots in Morrow's backyard.
Magistrate David Day convicted Morrow without penalty for possessing a prohibited plant.
